unusual lollipop thing

This is a lemon and lime flavoured sweet entirely encrusted in... chilli flakes. It was a gift from a friend from latin america, but I am not sure if people eat these for fun anywhere in the world. Maybe he was just messing with me.
It's not too bad. The burning sensation with the lemon and lime kind of works, a bit like the vodka shots with tabasco in them. I couldn't finish it though.
I think this would be nice with tequila. Or while drunk. Or both.

Yes, I came from a little mexican town in central Florida and they sold similar things. The taste you describe also comes in a bottle form. I don't think it is a fun flavor myself.

Heh. I live in New Mexico, and trust me--chile and candy go together hand in hand down here.

Actually, the flavor inside is Mango. I live in Mexico and those things are very popular here, specially among teenage girls (im not kidding). I guess we have different taste buds configuration, or something. We have them in a lot of different presentations: a kind of drink that looks like a cherry ICEE made with chile and chamoy called "chamoyada"; tamarind seeds with chile powder; jicama (a kind of large water chestnut) with powder chili and lemon, and many others....definitely not for gentle pallates.

You need to come to Louisiana where we have great cuisine. I moved here for a graduate degree in 1991 and stayed for the cooking. I suspect that my ancestors left England in the 1600s to escape the food. When I see the things you thought were OK I feel genuine pity for you. You need to visit New Orleans (contrary to rumor it is not completely destroyed) and enjoy the Creole restaurants and then drive over to Lafayette for the authentic Cajun places. Avoid the Summer because it is too hot and the crawfish are not in season. Spring is best.

I love these things, I lived in Mexico for a year when I was young and these were everywhere. As Yugi said, there are lots of interesting Chili related snacks that are popular down there. My favorite is mixed watermelon and jicama with chile, salt, and lime on it... so good. Cantalope and pretty much any melon are good with chile salt and lime too.

I've never set foot in Mexico although I used to find those in various grocery stores in Southern California. They are very awesome and are probably an acquired taste. Try it again and maybe you'll like it more.
